Where The Crawdads Sing

Here’s a casual introduction of this nature-centric, coming of age film, featuring a cottagecore analysis. Learn about its loveable and curious protagonist and all that she must endure in Where the Crawdads Sing.

Summary:

A young woman, living alone in North Carolina’s marshland, is identified as the main suspect of a small town murder case, in the 1960s. While awaiting her trial, the thoughtful recluse recounts her life leading up to that day. Within the adolescence of an abandoned girl a variety of unique characters are introduced. Amidst nature, how do these individuals affect her development…and the trial’s verdict?

The Main Character:

Get ready to fall in love with “the marsh girl.” From her timid mannerisms to her vivid amphibian paintings, this artsy, young woman is our protagonist, known as “Kya.” With people being the cause of all her problems, nature serves as a reliable comfort for her. Her love and curiosity about the wetland environment is evident, as she illustrates and paints the creatures residing alongside her, in the marsh. Kya develops a vast knowledge about nature…which is subsequently stifled in the cells of a jail cell.

Why is Where the Crawdads Sing Cottagecore?

While it may not be a representation of the aesthetic, there are certainly subtle signatures of cottagecore prevalent throughout Where the Crawdads Sing (besides just fishing). Beginning with the main character- Kya loves to draw and paint nature; naturally spending ample time outdoors. After all, the main character lives in a cabin on over 100 acres of land! Now that’s the true cottagecore dream. Full of plants and animals, the wetland setting truly adheres to the outdoorsy facet of cottagecore. Besides the outdoorsy setting, another aspect of cottagecore is present in the time period. As the film takes place in the 1960’s, an old-fashioned (aka cottagecore) lifestyle is demonstrated. Surely enough, many background characteristics give Where the Crawdads Sing the wax seal of cottagecore approval. And yes, there are picnics.
