American beautyberry is uniquely beautiful because this pretty plant reveals special features every season!

American beautyberry is a shrub with long branches and large green leaves bursting from clusters of tiny pink blossoms, before those flowers become mini, purple berries. Beautyberry grows in the Eastern United States in a variety of places, from across coastal plains to along swamp edges.

Small groupings of white and pink or lavender-colored flowers bloom on the American beautyberry in Summertime.
Then arrives the namesake of this plant…tiny, bright purple berry clusters burst forth, throughout late Summer and early Autumn, and last even longer.
That’s right; the beautyberry bush lasts during Wintertime! It has a long, half-year lifespan.
The beautiful berries are edible, although while they aren’t much to people, they certainly are a wonderful meal to wildlife, while other food is scarce during the winter.

The beautyberry’s biggest fanbase is birds, with over 40 species of them including mockingbirds, robins, and warblers, enjoying the bright snack.

Birds will be sure to visit if you plant some beautyberry, yourself and they’ll help slowly plant even more!
Why might you want to plant some American beautyberry? After all, in addition to the odd taste, the leaves have a nasty scent. But there’s a secret specialty in this scent. It’s all from a chemical, in the leaves, which repels ticks and mosquitos!
Plus, If you don’t mind the taste, then you can enjoy beautyberry jam or jelly!

So get planting and enjoy the various, long lasting beauty of American beautyberry from the crushed-leaf repellent in July to the beautiful bee-attracting flowers in August to the gorgeous source of food (and animal attraction) in November!
